Going To The DARK SIDE

CLICK HERE to go directly to the blog.

Going for Darker Shades

For a lot of women, going darker can either soften up facial features or bring attention to many others. There are many darker shades to choose from and each has its own appeal depending on skin tone and preference. Darker hair shades also have some very natural, shiny properties as well as less dulling appearances as the color fades. Darker shades can also provide more exotic hairstyles as well because of the varying tones that can be combined.

Now let’s take for example Victoria Beckham’s transformation to brunette hair. Victoria looked great with the lighter shades but did not look as full as the brunette color. The darker color seems to compliment her very well and make her appear fuller as it seems to contrast her more delicate, petite features.

I have had several clients that have wanted to change to a warm brunette with amazing results. One in particular was a perfect client in the sense that she took her time to wrap her mind around the idea that she was going to look very different, being that she was almost platimum blonde. She was ecstatic with the results! The hair was amazingly shiny, was extremely vibrant and looked very healthy. She loved it!!! I must say, she even looks younger and everyone thinks she looks great!

Stay tuned for next week’s tips on getting highlights and lowlights.

Going for Lighter Hair Color

Going for Lighter Color Shades.

CLICK HERE to go directly to the blog.

To Go Where No Blonde Has Gone Before.

For women who want to go lighter towards blonde shades, the change can be very dramatic if going from darker shades. Blonde hair color provides a very light and playful look but NOT as much shine as darker tones. Blonde color can add some life to dull hair and with some highlights can appear extremely stunning. For people who desire blonde hair, selecting darker shades of blonde are probably better starting options that still provide the great feeling of blonde hair. Another issue with blonde colored hair is that it tends to lose its vibrancy, but proper hair products help keep hair full of color is definitely a must.

Now let’s take a look at an example. Everyone knows Jessica Alba with her dark locks. She shows how to change to blonde hair by going with a darker blonde with some lighter highlights that produce a very energetic hairstyle for her. It is easy to see the differences from going from dark brunette to blonde as her look is softened and the brown eyes do not jump out as much. This is a great example for woman with darker tones wanting to change to blonde tones.

Stay tuned next week for tips on going for a darker shade from being blonde.

Dramatic Color Changes!

CLICK HERE to go directly to the blog

To Change or Not to Change?! That is the BIG Question.

Women have always felt the need to change their hairstyles and hair color, some more often than others and for many different reasons. They want to keep it fresh, they feel the need for a new look, or they just to go along with another fad in hair styles or hair color. The New Year is a perfect time for fresh changes and a hair color update can REALLY liven up a hairstyle. Many celebrities have opted for total hair color transformation and have shown great style.

The same color adjustments can work the rest of us “regular” women. A different hair color can be very complimentary or add some head turning flair and don’t we all want that? When it comes to color transformations, there are several options including total color reversals whether going from light to dark or from dark to light, adding highlights and or lowlights, or switching to their natural color. Everyone should be aware that total color reversals can be very dramatic so do not be shocked when changing from dark to blonde and vice versa.

Stay tuned to next week’s blog for new tips on going from a dark color to a lighter tone.

Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy is gentle enough to use on ALL hair types: Color treated, chemically processed, bleached, highlighted or even chemically straightened! It penetrates the hair, repairing internal damage and coats the hair preventing further damage. The results are smooth, silky, shiny, straight hair lasting from 3 -6 months with proper care. · Smoother and Silkier
· Straighter and Shinier
· Easier and Faster to blow-dry
· Closer to being “maintenance-free”

Please keep in mind that this is NOT a straightening system, rather a SMOOTHING TREATMENT. It takes about 2-3 hours to do. A consultation is necessary so that you fully understand in detail the process and the results to be expected.

Fried Hair

CLICK HERE to go directly to the blog.

Fried Hair
We have all had fried, damaged hair at least once in our lives! What can we do to combat
this?

Many of us do color treatments, and a lot of us blow-dry but the majority use that tool…
yes, the flat iron on our hair. Afterward we feel our hair and notice that it has taken a beating. It is frizzy, split on the ends and hard to deal with. How do we get rid of the fried hair and, calm down our locks before our next appointment with our stylist?

Not to worry!! You don't have to stop the highlights, low-lights, or the bleach and dye. What you will need to do is put a little more work into your hair each day. What is happening to your hair is very simple. Your hair is getting completely dried out from all of the heat styling and chemicals being put into it. We need to jumpstart your hair and give it back some of its natural moisture.

Try shampooing and towel-dry your hair or let it air-dry at night time. Do not blow dry it. If you use a glossing or styling cream on your hair, apply it while your hair is still damp and use a brush or comb to distribute the product. In the morning, apply a heat protector on your hair like Aquage Beyond Body Thermal Styler before you turn on any styling tools then, style away! As time goes on, many people will find their hair easier to style using this method.

If you really need a boost for the dry hair, make an appointment with me for a conditioning treatment. Depending on your hair type, I can recommend specific conditioning treatment for you to use. Aquage Hydrating Balm is a deep conditioner that repairs the structural damage of the hair and Aquage Healing Conditioner renews strength and elasticity to weak damaged hair. Specifically, you should get a good glossing or styling cream and, a good heat protector. By the time you are ready for your next service at the salon, you will have a routine to keep your hair "just out of the salon" soft and smooth.

Log on next week for a new and revolutionary way to ELIMINATE 95% of frizz and REDUCE 50 % of curl without the use of harmful chemicals! This new smoothing system will make the hair:
· Smoother and Silkier
· Straighter and Shinier
· Easier and Faster to blow-dry
· Closer to being “maintenance-free”

All You Need To Know To Protect Your Hair From Color

CLICK HERE to go directly to the blog.

Hair Care: All you need to know to protect your hair from color.

Part 2 of 3: Protect hair color and fiber

For all the women who color and highlight their hair, this is for you. We ALL want beautiful hair. There is no beautiful color without healthy, beautiful hair. The healthier the hair, the better it retains color pigments and the more protected it is, the better it will resist damage from external sources. Without SPECIFIC care, hair color inevitably fades away. Highlights become dull and may even change to unsightly tones or brassiness. Aquage Color Protect shampoo contains UVA/UVB sunscreens to prevent fading and environmental damage and helps maintain hair color vibrancy longer. In turn, you will prolong the intensity, brilliance, depth of color as well as hair’s beauty by continually revitalizing its fiber and giving it permanent protection.

Eliminate dandruff and itchy scalp

Most of us have had dandruff at one time or another, especially during the winter season when our scalp tends to be drier. Dandruff results from a visible, massive shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp. It is caused by an accelerated renewal of the epidermis. Instead of taking an average of 28 days, the process speeds up to about 14 days. Dandruff conditions often cause itchiness and discomfort. Using a Tea Tree shampoo will help heal the scalp and eliminates the dry or seborrheic dandruff conditions, as well as purifies the scalp, and calms itchiness.

Tune in next week for Part 3 on learning what you can do to prevent having that "fried" hair nobody wants!

All You Need To Know For Healthy, Shiny Hair!

CLICK HERE to go directly to the blog.

Hair Care: All you need to know for healthy, shiny hair!
Part 1 of 3.

To create a beautiful hairstyle, hair care is the MOST important step and most people fail to maintain the proper treatment and hygiene of their hair. In today’s trendy and busy environment we are constantly over processing our hair, with chemicals, straightening irons and powerful hair dryers, removing the natural oils from our hair. For healthy hair we need to: brush, shampoo and condition our hair to achieve that ‘salon’ look we all crave for. To counter the damaging effects caused by hair styling always use a high quality shampoo and conditioner to strengthen and nourish your hair and maintain a proper nutritious diet.

Nourish naturally dry hair.

Dry by nature, hair suffers from the lack of sebum from the scalp. Deprived of the natural protection (the hydrolipidic mantel), the cuticle deteriorates with the *external attacks and *climatic excess. The intercellular cement becomes permeable. From evaporation, hair matter loses its moisture balance and becomes dry from within. Hair appears rough, dry, dull difficult to manage. Aquage Silkening Shampoo and Conditioner give softness and luster to hair without weighing it down.

Repair damaged or over processed hair.

Damaged hair becomes coarse, porous, difficult to untangle, breakable… damaged hair is the most fragile. Whatever is the cause of the damage, to nourish it is no longer enough. What is needed is an in-depth restructuring treatment. The ingredients in Aquage Strengthening Shampoo and Conditioner restore damaged hair’s fiber and superficial structures. Hair recovers the appearance, texture and softness of healthy hair.

Check back next week for Part 2 of learning what you need to do to have healthy, shiny hair. In next week’s blog, you will find out about protecting your hair against color, dandruff and itchy scalp.

I can't style my hair like my Hair Dresser! HELP?!

CLICK HERE to go directly to the blog.

I can never style my hair they way my stylist does!

If I had a $1 for every time my clients told me this, I would be retired! Without a doubt, this is probably the single biggest challenge that women face every single day. First of all, as a hairstylist I do this every day. Second, styling someone else’s hair is much easier due to the fact I have full use of my arms and can access the difficult areas of your head. That being said, you must be patient and practice. It is highly unlikely that it will come out right the first time or even by the tenth! Practice makes perfect. Ask me how to section your hair, what tools you will need to use, what products are recommended, and how to get to those hard to reach areas. When all else fails, ask me for a blow-dry lesson. This way, you can work through the style under my supervision and guidance and I can show you all the little tricks. Here’s a checklist for creating a great style at home.

Cleanse and condition with professional products. Today’s technology in shampoo and condition is truly remarkable. Depending on your desired style, whether it’s curly, straight, fine or damaged, there is a shampoo and conditioner designed just for you. Aquage hair products has an array of shampoos and conditioners that will suite every hair texture.

Remove excess moisture. Apply proper styling products and use the correct amount. All too often, products are over used. More doesn’t always mean better!

Choose your desired tools. Whatever brush that works best for you is the right tool! Clients often get hair tangled around a round brush. Don’t be frustrated. Sometimes it can be solved by changing the type of brush you use. There are vent and paddle brushes with various styles and materials used ranging from metal, ceramic, bore bristle, plastic, nylon etc. All have their pros and cons. When choosing a particular style, look at bristle pattern, length, density and firmness.
Remember to section off your hair when styling and use a clip to section away hair that you are not styling. Your section should never be wider or longer than the brush as this often leads to tangling. ***Tip*** If you have a particularly difficult growth patterns or fringe section, start in these areas because if left to air dry by itself, they can be much more challenging to style into the desired finish.

After blow dry is complete, use any recommended pastes, pomades, silicones or sprays. Again, watch product usage as too much of these products can leave hair looking greasy, heavy, and flat.

Hair Color TLC at Home!

CLICK HERE to go directly to the blog.

Treat your hair color to some TLC at home!!

In this down economy we still want our locks to look great. Here are some tips for you ladies who color your hair to help your color last and keep it looking just as great six weeks later!

After coloring, wait 48 hours before shampooing your hair-this allows the hair’s cuticle to seal thoroughly, “trapping” the color molecules, which prevent fading.

Shampoo daily with a gentle formula designed for color-treated hair. I suggest Aquage “Hydrating Shampoo” which contains a color protector. Rinse immediately with LUKEWARM water. (Hot water causes color to fade.) If you’re blonde, switch to a clarifying shampoo once a week to remove chlorine or hard-water minerals that can cause your hair to look dull or take on a greenish cast.

Follow with a rich conditioner, also designed for color-treated strands like Aquage “Hydrating Balm”. Concentrate the application to the end of the hair, avoiding root area. Rinse thoroughly after 3 min. with WARM water, NOT HOT. Then step away. Don’t let the water continue to saturate your conditioned hair.

Once a week, apply a deep-conditioning mask to damp, towel dried hair. I’ve found that Zerran’s Omni-Pak works very well. Make sure there is no dripping water so that you allow the deep conditioner to penetrate your hair. Remain in shower-the steam will help the product penetrate. Even better-cover moisturized strands with a plastic cap. Rinse after 10 min. and VOILA, beautiful hair color that lasts!

My Hair is Falling Out? How Much Is Too Much?

CLICK HERE to go directly to the blog.

This question was posed to me by one of my clients. Actually, many of my clients ask this question. Here is the answer! Hair loss is typically normal, especially in the fall months. Why?

Everyone loses between 50 and 150 strands a day, depending on how much hair you have, your age and your hair's growth cycle. People with fine hair tend to have more of it and therefore will lose more of it than their thicker-haired women. Your hair also thins as you get older, particularly after menopause for women.

Here are common causes of thinning and hair loss.

1. Seasonality. You'll lose the most hair in the fall -- typically November and December when hair reaches maturity in its growth cycle.

2. Diet. Hair loss can occur through poor dieting. Iron deficiency may be the cause. Check your levels with your doctor and take a supplement if it is low.

3. Aging. As we get older, follicles shrink, producing skinnier, shorter strands; then the follicles start to die off. That rate and the extent of that process is a matter of genetics.

4. Pregnancy. Some women experience hair loss with pregnancy or as part of post-pregnancy hormonal changes. Other women experience hair loss when going on or off (usually off) the birth control pill.

5. Illness or intense stress. Sometimes hair loss occurs as a result of illness. Stress, excessive weight loss, iron deficiency and thyroid problems can also cause hair loss.If you're really worried, ask your doctor, however, experts say you really only need to worry if your part is getting wider or you can see your scalp through your hair.

Keep in mind that extra long hair will always seem like there is more lost, but in fact it is the length that makes it seem that way.

How to get Long, Beautiful, Healthy Hair.

CLICK HERE to go directly to the blog.

Can I have Long, Beautiful, Healthy Hair?

YES YOU CAN!! Here is how: A Regular Trim Will Keep it Healthy.

Long hair: Some people love it some people don’t. Everyone has different preferences when it comes to hair length. Men usually think that long hair on a woman is the ONLY kind of style that looks good. Many women cling to their long locks for the same reason. Whatever the reasons, most people with long hair are adamant about keeping it long. This is a good thing, as long as the hair is HEALTHY!

The longer the hair is, the longer it's been exposed to the tortures we put our hair through every day. The sun, wind, blow-drying, pony-tail holders, harsh shampoos, smog, pillows, and even poor diet can all take their toll on hair. In order to keep your hair looking healthy, even if it's long, you MUST keep it trimmed.

On average, hair grows at a rate of about 1/2 inch per month, and typically the hair should be trimmed every 6-8 weeks to help maintain it healthy. Those of you who have a short cut and want to grow it out, it can be done! Just ask for a "clean-up". This means trimming only what is necessary every 6-8 weeks. Keep in mind that if you are hard on your hair, it may require more off the ends.

This brings us to the issue of split ends. Most everyone has them but it more of a common problem for those with long hair. Split-ends can be treated with protein rich conditioners to strengthen the hair, (I prefer Aquage Healing Conditioner) and with anti-frizz serums, like Aquage Ultra Shine Complex, that coat the hair and bind the ends back together temporarily. But sometimes, trimming is necessary to remove these splits before they get worse. With long, blunt-cut hair, trimming the ends of the hair is a simple matter of following the established line and removing the damaged ends. Yet with long-layered hairstyles, there is an alternative that works especially well.

Also keep in mind that if you choose to delay your cut because you want your hair to grow out, you will cause more damage. If there are split ends that are not properly dealt with, they will travel up the hair shaft and cause your hair to look frizzy, frayed and thinned out at the ends.

By keeping your hair trimmed on a regular basis, the result will be smoother, healthier looking hair with an awesome style!

With this in mind, stop by MarBella Hair Studio to pick up these and other Aquage products for your hair.

From LA to Austin- The Beach Wave Look

CLICK HERE to go directly to the blog.

One of the hottest trends in Hollywood is the Beach Wave Hair. I’m not talking the “curl look”, but how Vanessa Hudgens, Carmen Electra, Kate Hudson and Blake Lively wear their hair. I’m often asked “How do I get that Beach Wave Look”? Here is the step by step explanation on how to achieve it.

Tools you’ll need: 10-20 cloth covered rubber bands, flat iron or curling iron, comb, and thermal protector and flexible hold hair spray.

Length of hair: Shoulder length or longer.

Step 1: Start with your hair dry and clean. Spray thermal protector and comb through. Braid hair into sections. Larger braids mean bigger waves and smaller braids mean tighter waves. Braid the entire head and secure the ends with rubber bands.

Step 2: Once the hair is braided, run the flat iron from the top of the braid to the bottom or you can curl the braids if you don’t want to have straight ends. For more hold, lightly mist braids with flexible hold hairspray. Flat iron or curl each and every braid. Let the braids cool for 5 minutes to allow the braids to set.

Step 3: Once the braids are cooled down, spray the braids with hairspray once more and remove the rubber bands. Undo each braid then comb through hair using your fingers to soften the waves. Then mist with hairspray to set the style and you are ready for a night on the town! For added drama try a cool head band or a chic clip.

Stop by MarBella Hair Studio to ask me about the Aquage Thermal Protector and Hair Spray you should use to achieve this look and bring this HOT trend to Austin.

Tame your Summer Frizz

CLICK HERE to go directly to the blog.

Love the sunshine, barbecues, and concerts in the park—but I hate your summer hair? What to do with your frizzy mop during summer.

You shouldn’t expect a string of “great” hair days in August, but it is possible to leave the house with a perfectly acceptable “do”.

Slicking hair back is the simplest, but it’s a severe look that’s not for everyone. One approach is blow-drying the hairline so that there’s a soft look around the face, then pulling the rest of your hair back into a neat ponytail to get it off your neck.

I suggest taking a non combative stance toward your hair. If it’s curly, go with it. After your shower, gently squeeze out (don’t wring) excess water with a towel, distribute a good-size glop of de-frizz gel like: Aquage Defining Gel, then twist pieces of hair around your fingers and air-dry. Don’t brush it, or you’ll be right back where you started: frizzy.

Another humidity-beating trick is to part the hair down the center and twist each side into a neat bun secured with a large bobby pin. Apply an anti frizz crème like Aquage Curl Defining Crème after showering and then scrunching pieces from the bottom up. A quick shakeout once it’s dried and a little silicone on the ends, should give hair a natural but still groomed look.

How you cut and wash your makes a difference, too. Get a summertime cut that focuses on removing bulk, so there’s less hair to frizz; to keep it from drying out. I recommend a Aquage Silkening Shampoo that smooths and silkens course and curly hair.

All hair gurus agree that weekly deep-conditioning is key this time of year. Zerran’s Omni Pak Protein Hair Reconstructor, is the ultimate deep reconstructor designed for dry, damaged hair. Omni Pak contains soy proteins and moisture lipids to bring new life to normal, chemically processed or damaged hair.

And for that added layer of protection, don’t forget to make an appointment for your deep-conditioning treatment.

GET NOTICED!
3 standout summer beauty trends

As the weather heats up, it’s tempting to limit your beauty regimen to a swipe of a ponytail. Yes, summer beauty should be pared down, fresh, light and fun. And in warm weather, a little goes a long way. But stuffing strands into a scrunchie might not be the best strategy for achieving summer chic. Here are 3 hair trends, straight from fashion catwalks around the world, that make the perfect impact for the season.

1. Think mink
Led by the style leaders like Posh Spice, Drew Barrymore and Miley Cyrus, brunettes are back and they’re better than ever. What makes browns now? Rich, warm, luscious color. Brunette color is definitely easier to maintain, and it’s flattering and dramatic on warm skin tones. Switch to vivid make-up colors if you embrace your dark side—it will give your look more depth.
2. Blondes play it cool
There’s nothing like a cool, champagne hue to lower the heat of summer. Mocha lowlights keep this look dimensional and real-looking. Who says vanilla is boring? This summer, it’s the blonde flavor of choice.
3. Fringe benefits
It’s the quickest way to make over a ‘do’, which might be why so many models carved out bangs this season. There are great options for every face and style—from a short, gamine, choppy fringe to a sexy side sweep or a squared-off Mod look. To prevent the dreaded bang pouf, use a paddle-brush rather than a round brush to blow dry, or run dry strands through a flat iron to eliminate creases or bumps.

Manage your hair from the effects of Chlorine

Here are some tips on how to manage your hair from the effects of Chlorine. Since Summer is here many of you gals will be spending a lot of time in the pool and it won't take long before you realize that the chlorine build up can be a real issue. Chlorine can not only dry your hair, but it can cause your ends to appear more damaged, and build up on your hair. The build up feels unpleasant and makes hair dull, hard to style and for you blondes out there, sometimes green!!!

Here are three easy steps to prevent chlorine from causing problems. 1)Wet your hair thoroughly before entering the pool whether at home or using the shower at the pool. The most important thing to remember is: for chlorine not to adhere to your hair, you must 2) put a conditioner on your hair to protect it from chlorine, concentrating on the ends. 3) Wash your hair thoroughly, immediately upon exiting the pool every time with a clarifying shampoo and follow with a moisturizing conditioner. I recommend the Zerran Equalizer, which I carry at the salon. Zerran can only be found at professional hair salons.

Although shampooing often and getting into a regular clarifying routine is a great way to start to combat the chlorine problem most of my clients say that it doesn't completely get rid of the chlorine build up in your hair. Many salons can do an in-salon treatment to help remove the chlorine build up. I recommend that my clients with chlorine issues come in for a treatment every 4-8 weeks.

If you are interested in purchasing the Equalizer, please contact me at info@MarBellaHair.com.
